William Purvine was well know around the early mining camps for his expertise in designing and building machinery to improve the efficiency of extracting and concentrating raw material to forms more suitable for shipping to refineries in Midwest and other locations. It was in that endeavor that he lost his life in an accident in the Hecla Consolidated Mining Company's smelter at Glendale.
